Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have been unveiled by the Cupertino-based technology giant, and the new smartphones will be available in India from October 7. In a first, Apple not only announced the official date of release for India at its event, but also declared the launch price of iPhone 7. The 32 GB base variant of iPhone 7 will cost Rs 60,000. This is actually Rs 2,000 less than the launch price of Apple iPhone 6s! The prices of iPhone 7 Plus and other variants of iPhone 7 have not yet been revealed by Apple.
Festive season begins from October in India and we believe that there is no better time to launch the new iPhones in India than the coming month. Traditionally, Apple iPhone tend to cost higher than their previous models, but given the price sensitive nature of the Indian market and its growing importance for the company, Apple may have decided to go for a launch price that is within range of the previous versions.
As some leaked images had suggested, the new iPhones have the much awaited quality of being water resistant! Not only that, Apple claims that both the phones have the “best-ever” cameras on an iPhone ever. Apple iPhone 7 Plus actually has a dual rear camera of 12 MP. The new camera system has optical stabilization, f1.8 aperture lens, a new six-element lens. The new 12 MP sensor, claims Apple, is 60 per cent faster and 30 per cent more energy efficient. Apple has also done away with the headphone jack, a move that would mean that the new iPhones would require wireless ear pods. The new iPhone will come in colours of Jet black, high gloss finish. There will be a second “new black”, called simply “black”. Gold, silver and rose gold colours will be available as well.
Analysts that FE Online had spoken to ahead of the Apple event had also indicated that the price of the new iPhones would start from around Rs 60,000. Jaipal Singh, Market Analyst, Client Devices at IDC India had said, “Historically, iPhone prices in India have remained higher compare to USA or any other operator driven markets. Apple completely imports its devices in India and considering the taxation and duty structure, we can expect it to be higher in India.” “We expect the base model of iPhone to be Rs 60,000 plus in India,” Singh had told FE Online.
Apple fans can also find additional reasons to cheer, for the company may cut official prices of earlier versions, making them more affordable. “Apple is still a strong aspirational brand and many smartphone users seek to be part of the Apple ecosystem. Apple’s older versions have usually received a price cut post the new launches in the market which helps these seekers enter in the Apple ecosystem,” IDC’s Jaipal Singh had said.
Peter Richardson, Research Director, Tech Strategies at Counterpoint Research told FE Online yesterday, “Apple tends to launch new iPhone versions at broadly the same level as the launch of the predecessor models – assuming the equivalent memory capacity. The older models then move down the price range to make room for the new variant. This also happens in India though with the higher price offset.”
