Global e-commerce giant Amazon has promoted Amit Agarwal, the head of its India operations, to the role of global senior vice-president from his current position of V-P and country manager. This elevation is seen as a recognition of Agarwal’s achievement in making Amazon the strong No. 2 player in the Indian e-commerce market.An Amazon India spokesperson said, “This indicates how excited Amazon is about the progress the company is making in India and the opportunity it sees ahead.”
Agarwal launched Amazon’s operations in India in September 2013 when he was appointed as V-P and country manager. In the last three-and-half-years, given its growth in the Indian market, Amazon has totally committed an investment of $5 billion. During this period, Amazon India overtook Snapdeal and is currently locked in a battle with Flipkart.
The IIT Kanpur graduate and Stanford University alumnus joined Amazon in 1999. He has been in various roles in Amazon, including being the “shadow and technical advisor” to Amazon founder and global CEO Jeff Bezos for two years. This position is seen as a very coveted role in Amazon.
Agarwal will now directly report to Jeff Bezos and will be based in India. Agarwal has been consistently praised for his efforts in India during various quarterly financial analyst calls of Amazon.
The company is looking to make India its second-largest market outside of the US.
