In yet another crackdown launched by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh, it has been ordered that the land mafia should get booked under the much stricter Gangster Act henceforward, an ANI report said. To give greater incisiveness to the order as well as to apportion responsibility, the UP government has said that a team of District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) will act in concert on all reports of corruption that come to them.

Earlier in April, the state government in a major move to free state-owned land from illegal occupants, had approved setting up of anti-land mafia task force. It had also decided to constitute a four-level task force to take firm action against land grabbers, as per an FE Bureau report. The state cabinet had decided that all encroached lands would be identified within two months by the district-level task force, which was also mandated to prepare a list of all land grabbers in the state in order to rein in the land mafia. State Power minister Srikant Sharma had aslo said that no grabbing of public land will be permitted  in the name of religion.

“Within two months, all such lands which have been encroached upon will be identified and anyone can lodge a complaint at the police station regarding land grabbing. In fact, the state government has also decided to develop a portal for lodging complaints to put an end to land grabbing,” he was quoted as saying in a press conference by FE Bureau.
