The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has once again increased the metro fares in the capital city and commuters are now finding it difficult to maintain their travel expenses. Now, for travelling beyond 5km, you may have to shell out an extra Rs 10 and for journeys between 2km and 5km, you will have to cough up Rs 5 more. This is for the second time within a span of five months that the DMRC has hiked fares. People have also lamented the fact that the fare hike is completely unjustified unless the DMRC intends to provide passengers with better facilities. However, the smart card users – who reportedly constitute 70 per cent of the commuters – will continue to get a 10 per cent discount. As many people are still not aware of these new rules and fare structure of the DMRC, here are some noted hacks by which you can save money out of your daily travel in Delhi Metro:
i. After fare hike, it has become important for commutes – especially who travel on a daily basis – to have smart cards. These smart cards not just give you 10 per cent discount, but also travelling during off-peak hours provide an additional 10 per cent off compared to buying a token.
ii. Having a smart card will not just save your money, but also reduce the travel time as you will not have to stand in long queue for getting a token.
iii. Smart cards give you option to make a mid-way change in your travel plans. Buying a metro token restricts you to de-board at the particular metro station, but if you have a smart card you can make last minute change in your travel plan and de-board at any station you want. The money will be deducted accordingly from your card.
iv. As smart cards are not issued on one particular name, every member of your family can use it.
v. Recharging your smart card is now possible using your mobile phones. Applications such as Paytm, Mobikwik and others give you an option to recharge your smart cards with just few clicks.
