In a unique display of bonhomie, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad today heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Azad said he wanted to congratulate PM Modi for underlining that a leader must follow the tradition set by his or her predecessor and improve it. Azad said this while welcoming Vice President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Venkaiah Naidu in the upper House of Parliament. Notably, PM Modi had made that statement last evening.
Meanwhile, Naidu was today sworn in as the vice president of India. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to Naidu at a ceremony in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan. The 68-year-old took over as Rajya Sabha Chairman after taking the oath. In his welcome note for Naidu, PM Modi said that the Vice President has come to hold the high office from his long experience in Parliament. Naidu has risen from the grassroots and will lead the Indian polity to greater heights, the Prime Minister said in Rajya Sabha, according to PTI reports.
Naidu succeeded Hamid Ansari whose term ended yesterday.
