The All India Muslim Personal Law Board had rejected the questionnaire on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Law Commission on triple talaq. The Board had accused the Government of trying to evoke a ‘war’ in the Muslim community. Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today quashed all such claims and called for a debate on the matter.

Naidu said that BJP and the Government stands for the justice of women. Naidu said ”Equality for all’ is our motto and it’s a common code of Consitution.

The BJP leader added that people want triple talaq to end and the same has been initiated by the Government in Supreme Court.

Rebutting all claims that this is a move to trigger political waves, Naidu said ”You want to boycott Law Commission, then it’s your choice but don’t force your view on others and don’t make it political.”

Triple Talaq being linked to UCC but main issues are gender justice, non-discrimination & dignity of women, Venkaiah Naidu added.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board had also claimed that less number of divorces are reported in Muslim community than any other and hence the demand for triple talaq ban is invalid. The affidavit filed by the Board said “Marriage is a contract in which both the parties are not physically equal. Male is stronger and female weaker sex. Man is not dependent upon woman for his protection.”

The triple talaq provision allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife by merely pronouncing talaq thrice or saying it three times simultaneously in three sentences.
