Indian cricket legend Virender Sehwag has congratulated Major Nitin Leetul Gogoi after he was honoured with the Army chief’s Commendation Card for his sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations. It was Major Gogoi who had tied a man to a jeep in Kashmir as a shield against stone pelters, according to reports. Hailing Gogoi over his efforts, Sehwag tweeted Congratulations Major Nitin Gogoi for the medal of commendation.
“Major Gogoi has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation Card for his sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations,” Army spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand said yesterday.

Sehwag has been vociferous on an array of issues on Twitter. Last moth, he and Gautam Gambhir had come out in support of CRPF jawans who were attacked by stone pelters in Srinagar during elections in the Kashmir Valley. Images of a stone pelter hitting a CRPF jawan that emerged soon after the elections went viral even as the jawan kept calm though he was armed and refused to retaliate. A video of the same incident emerged on social media that showed youths assaulting the jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Srinagar. The CRPF jawan, in the video, is seen being heckled, and kicked by a group of youths, according to PTI report. Sehwag was disturbed by the images and tweeted, “This is Unacceptable ! Cant do this to our CRPF jawaans. This rot has to stop. Badtameezi ki hadd hai”.

All factors including notable performance of Major Gogoi and ‘overall emerging indicators’ of the Court of Inquiry, have been ‘well-considered’ while conferring the award on him, Army sources told PTI. A video, showing the man tied to the Army vehicle during polling in the Srinagar Lok Sabha by-election on April 9 had triggered a controversy, prompting the force to institute a probe.
Major Gogoi was given the award during Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir last week, according to PTI report.
The Army chief’s ‘Commendation Card’ is considered a prestigious award and is given for distinguished services and devotion to duty.
