A year after the party went under deep crisis in Arunachal Pradesh as it had an alleged internal fight, the Congress party may well be heading towards another such crisis in party-ruled Himachal Pradesh. According to an Indian Express report, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has been at loggerheads with state Congress chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu. The chief minister also told the party MLAs that he will neither contest nor lead the party in the coming Assembly elections. Assembly elections are due after few months in the state.
Critics of Virbhadra Singh alleged that he is trying to clear the path for his son Vikramaditya Singh by forcing the high command to sack Sukhu, as per The Indian Express report. The party MLAs have sought the intervention of the Congress high command immediately. Many in the party are also wondering where the party high command is. Sushilkumar Shinde, AICC general secretary in charge of the state, is celebrating Ganesh festival in Maharashtra while Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is abroad. Congress political secretary, Ahmed Patel, is in Gujarat while Sonia Gandhi herself has more or less detached herself from everyday organisational issues, the IE report said.
According to India Today report, in the meeting, the party members were shocked over the revelation by the CM that he would not be contesting the elections. However, 27 MLAs passed a resolution extending support to Virbhadra Singh during a meeting of the Congress legislature party. The meeting was held on August 25. Virbhadra Singh, a six-time CM, is one of the top leaders under whom the Congress won the state elections.
“Despite repeated requests by the members, he did not reveal as what has transpired between him and the high command. He was very emotional but firm that he would not reconsider his decision. Under the present circumstances, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) feels the high command should intervene and help sort out the matter at the earliest keeping that Singh is the tallest and the only acceptable leader of the state who is capable of leading the Congress party to victory,” the resolution said, as per India Today.
