Former Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke defended Virat Kohli on his comparison with US President Donald Trump by Australian media on Wednesday. The Australian skipper said it was “funny” to compare Kohli with Trump and believed the Indian cricket captain also found it funny. In an interaction with India Today, Clarke talked about the Kohli’s performance, ongoing series between India and Australia and the reports of the Australian press. The sportsman said he is watching the series and called it “one of the best series” that reminded him of 2005 Ashes series. He lauded the efforts of both Indian and Australian team in the matches and said “both teams fighting hard” to win.

The cricket has always witnessed players and teams involving in verbal spats on or off ground, but this time media of Australia also involved in it. A piece in The Daily Telegraph compared Kohli to Trump, who has recently become the US President. The article read, “Virat Kohli has become the Donald Trump of world sport. Just like President Trump, Kohli decided to blame the media as a means of trying to hide the egg smeared right across his face.”

Asked to give his reaction to the report, Clarke smiled and said, “I found Virat Kohli comparison with Donald Trump quite funny. I am sure Kohli will also find it funny.” He further said the Australian media is “passionate” and added that Kohli is smart enough to take care of such things. “I don’t think he (Virat Kohli) will care what Aussie press is writing. His focus will be on winning series,” said Clarke.

Soon after the report went viral, reactions started coming from over the globe. Commentator Harsha Bhogle even called it “toxic”. In a series of tweets, Bhogle said “a lot of us entered this profession because we love sport and had the opportunity to talk/write about it. We didn’t enter to spread toxicity.”

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachachan also reacted on the reports and shuts Aussie media. In his tweet, Big B said, “Aussi media calls Virat, Donald Trump of sports !! … thank you Aussi media for accepting that he is a winner and the PRESIDENT !!
