Vijay Rupani a BJP leader is a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly representing Rajkot West and presently State cabinet minister of Gujarat government and also the President of BJP Gujarat unit. Rupani currently looks to be the frontrunner for the post. His chances are high since he can keep the cadre intact, as he is loved equally by the Sangh (RSS) and the Sangathan (party). He also is close to BJP chief whip Amit Shah. He has the support of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh with which he has a long time association since 1971. He served as BJP’s Gujarat unit general secretary and as a chairman of the Gujarat Finance Board when Narendra Modi was the chief minister.
Currently, he is in charge of transport, water supply labour and employment. He was inducted in the first cabinet expansion by Anandiben Patel. Former CM, Anandiben Patel on Monday resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Gujarat, after she wrote in a Facebook post citing reasons that she was old now and it was time for new leadership to take over. BJP had accepted her resignation. The Gujarat government has been in the middle of a turmoil for quite some time. The government had to face a lot of criticism after four Dalit youths were thrashed in Una on July 11 for allegedly skinning a dead cow.
Amit Shah once asked Vijay Rupani, instead of Anandiben Patel, to make an announcement for 10% quota for the economically backward among upper castes. Rupani even retained his cabinet portfolio although he was appointed as party’s state chief in February. From being Rajkot mayor and BJP’s general secretary, Rupani has emerged as a people leader and also someone who can keep everyone in the cadre happy.
