For the upcoming Vengara byelections in Kerala, the UDF and LDF have come out officially with the names of their respective candidates. Both parties – UDF and LDF – have announced their choices clearly as per the latest news reports. Mathrubhumi has reported that UDF is all set to field IUML leader KNA Khader as its candidate. Initial reports had hinted the name of the IUML’s state general secretary KPA Majeed and the names of UA Latheef and PMA Salam had also been doing the initial rounds. However, after KPA Majeed backed out citing organisational responsibilities, the name of KNA Khader has been confirmed officially.

The decision was announced by IUML state President Hyderali Shihab Thangal at a press meeting held today, along with PK Kunhalikutty, MP. PK Kunhalikutty stated that the election campaign will begin from today.

The LDF has decided to field PP Basheer as their candidate. This has also been confirmed by the CPM State Secretariat. It is the party district secretariat that reportedly recommended PP. Basheer’s name for the Vengara bypolls.

For those who are not familiar with the developments, the Vengara Assembly bypoll is scheduled to be held on October 11. This development has been necessitated by PK Kunhalikutty’s resignation as sitting MLA and his subsequent election to the Lok Sabha from Malappuram this year, following the demise of prominent leader E. Ahamed. In 2016, PK Kunhalikutty won the constituency with a whopping margin of 38,057 votes, which indicates the stronghold that the party has in the region. However, CPI(M) is eyeing the post and not hesitant to put up a strong campaign to win in this constituency.

The last date for submitting nominations for the Vengara bypolls is September 22.
