Varanasi Stampede: 24 reported dead, critically injured rushed to local hospital

A trip to visit Jai Baba Gurudev's campaign in Varanasi turned into a stampede as crowd management failed on the Rajghat bridge over river Ganga.

A trip to visit Jai Baba Gurudev’s campaign in Varanasi turned into a stampede as crowd management failed on the Rajghat bridge over river Ganga. At least 19 people are known to have been killed due to the accident, out of which 15 were females. 4 other remain critically injured. The accident happened as a large number of devotees were trying to get a glimpse of the religious leader in Varanasi. While it is reported that the authorities are in an attempt to transfer the injured to the local hospital for proper medical attention.

 

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announce a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of those who dies in the tragic incident. He also announced RS 50,000 each for of the devotees who were left critically injured. Although, any comments from Jai Baba Gurudev or his ashram on the accident have not been reported yet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, went on social media site Twitter and offered his condolences to the victims.

The Prime Minister also announced a financial aid of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those died in the stampede and Rs 50,000 to those injured. The police said that the stampede was caused due to the impatience among the crowd and attributed the heat and humidity as a major cause for it. It further said that nearly 80,000 people were present on the streets despite the organisers taking permission for only 3000 people.

The devotees were headed to a glimpse of the religious Guru on his birth anniversary. The celebratory function for his anniversary had been going in the town for the last 3 days. The District magistrate talked to NBT and said that the stampede has caused a long traffic issue for a few kilometres. NBT also reported that the Director General of Police left for Lucknow, from Delhi.
