BJP MP and Dalit leader Udit Raj has raked up a controversy, apparently suggesting that beef eating can fetch gold medals at the Olympics. In a tweet that may embarrass the BJP, which has always taken a tough stand against beef consumption and cow slaughter across the country, Raj said that Jamaican athlete and Olympics Triple Gold winner Usain Bolt went on to win nine Olympic gold medals despite being born in poverty after his trainer advised him to eat beef twice a day. However, soon after the controversy broke out, the BJP MP sought to downplay the issue. “My tweet is not even remotely connected to advocate beef eating rather it is reproduction of Bolt trainer statement,” he tweeted.
Talking to India Today TV, Raj said that he made the statement to highlight the lack of “winning spirit” among athletes. Further, he said, “I cited circumstances of Jamaica that despite poor infrastructure & poverty Bolt won 9 gold so our players should find ways like that to win.” Raj said that he had only cited the words of Bolt’s coach.

Interestingly, when Sakshi Malik had won bronze in wrestling at the Rio Olympics, Raj had tweted: “Inspirational confidence of #SakshiMalik would spur a few million young girls to write their own destiny. She makes the nation proud!”

The explanation, however, didn’t go well with the Twitterati as well as several others who wondered why Raj made such an “absurd comment”.
@Dr_Uditraj This is unnecessary tweet. Hope, next time you will have reason for tweet.

Some even compared Raj’s comments on the winning spirit of Indian athletes to the one by socialite Shobhaa De who had suggested that Indian Olympians at Rio were only interested in taking selfies, wasting money and not winning.
