Addressing the nation after launching the UDAN (Ude Desh ke Aam Nagrik) scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that his dream was to see the ‘hawai chappal wearing’ travellers fly. Earlier today, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the first UDAN flight under the Regional Connectivity Scheme on the Shimla-Delhi sector. PM Modi also inaugurated the flights on the Kadapa-Hyderabad and the Nanded-Hyderabad sectors. Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said that the aviation sector in India was full of opportunities and UDAN would help transform the lives of the middle class and increase their aspirations. Stating that aviation will no longer remain the preserve of the few he said, “We had the opportunity to frame a civil aviation policy, which caters to aspirations of the people of India”.

The fares for these UDAN flights have been to be capped at Rs 2,500. In a tweet PM Modi had said, that UDAN was a global, one-of-its kind scheme introduced to stimulate regional connectivity through a market-based mechanism. “To make air travel accessible to citizens in regionally important areas, the ‘Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik’ RCS (regional connectivity scheme) was launched in October 2016,” he had added.

Launched on June 15, 2016, the UDAN scheme is considered to be a key component of the National Civil Aviation Policy. “Airfare for a 1-hour journey of appx. 500 km on a fixed wing aircraft or for a 30-minute journey on a helicopter would be capped at Rs 2,500,” the PMO said. “This with proportionate pricing for routes of different stage lengths and flight duration,” the Prime Minister’s Office added. According to an official statement, 24 airports in the western region, 17 in the northern region, 11 in the southern region, 12 in east and 6 in north-eastern parts of the country are proposed to be connected under this scheme.
