Two police personnel injured in Naxal encounter near Chhatisgarh’s Sukma

Joint teams had been carrying out the operation since yesterday based on the leads about the location of Maoist hideouts in Basaguda and Awapalli police area.

In yet another Naxal attack near Sukma district, two policemen were injured in an encounter on May 14. A joint team of security forces was in the area when the encounter took place at 10:30 in the morning today (Sunday), Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dantewada region) Sundarraj P told news agency PTI.

Joint teams had been carrying out the operation since yesterday based on the leads about the location of Maoist hideouts in Basaguda and Awapalli police area. The area is 450 km away from Raipur. The joint teams comprised of Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG), CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action).

The Naxals opened indiscriminate firing on the the CoBRA and DRG teams while they were crossing through the forests of Raigundam village which falls on the border of Bijapur and Sukma districts. The police then retaliated with the bullets and a gunfight broke out between the two sides, DIG infomed PTI. The rebels then reportedly fled from the spot.

“As per the injured jawans, after spotting that a couple of Naxals were hit by bullets in the exchange of fire, they were trying to retrieve their bodies. In the process, they came under fire by back-up support group of Naxals leaving two of the jawans injured,” DIG further said.

The Naxals also managed to take the bodies of the injured ultras away taking advantage of the thick vegetation.

An Mi-17 chopper was sent for the injured personnel. The official said that the personnel were airlifted and taken to Raipur. They have been admitted to a private hospital. The counter insurgency operation by the security forces was still underway in the area.

Elsewhere in Bihar, police arrested two Maoists with explosives from a village in Charkapatthar. The two Maoists, identified as Suresh Sao and Anwar Mian were from Budhia Lapar village. The two Naxalites were planting a can bomb on a road when the police made the arrest. They had targetted the road leading to Dhel Patthar jungle. The police seized 2.5 kg eplosives each from the duo.
