After she made the nation proud by showing an exemplary performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics podium, Gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s decision to return the BMW car gifted by Sachin Tendulkar came a shocker to many. Quoting maintenance issues, Dipa had tweeted that it won’t be possible for her to keep the car so she’ll give it back.
Her father had also said that due to the pathetic condition of roads in the city, maintaining such an expensive car was not possible for them hence it’d be better if they are given funds in place of it. Dipa however today said that she was just talking about a possibility.
She added that getting any gift from Sachin is a big thing and she can’t even think of returning it.
Karmakar said ”No return or refusal, just that there is no showroom, service centre of BMW in Agartala, so I was talking about a possibility.” She had also said that with the upcoming Challenger’s Cup in Germany, she does not want her mind to be diverted with expensive gifts. To which her coach Bisweshwar Nanda had said that this was a collective decision.
Sachin, however understanding Dipa’s reasons had requested her to retain the gift and had offered funds for maintenance.
The gymnast also added that she has spoken to the Badminton Association of Hyderabad to provide her with any vehicle that is locally available and has received their consent for it. Previously her coach had said that the Association had agreed to give them a equivalent amount for to Dipa on return of the car.
