Delhi’s Tis Hazari court on Thursday granted bail to TTV Dinakaran and his aide Mallikarjun in the case of allegedly bribing Election Commission officials for AIADMK’s two leaves symbol, ANI reported. The bail was granted on a personal bond of Rs 5 lakhs. The court, however, ordered them to surrender their passports as well. Dinakaran had been arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on April 25. The accused had sought bail on the grounds that the police did not have a reason to keep him in custody. He had also claimed that no public servant in the case had been made an accused, even though he was booked on graft charges.
The Delhi Police meanwhile had opposed his bail saying that he had conspired with others and used corrupt practices to undermine the sanctity of the election process.Mallikarjuna, also arrested on the same day as Dinakaran had sought bail on the grounds that the police had made no recovery at his instance and he had joined the investigation without any summons. All the accused, including middleman Sukesh Chandrasekhar and alleged hawala operator Nathu Singh, were to be in judicial custody till June 12.
The court, on May 22 had dismissed Chandrasekhar’s bail plea, saying that this was a serious crime and granting him bail could lead to the tampering of evidence. The police, on the other hand, had asked for both Dinakaran and Chandrasekhar’s consent for taking voice samples, but both had refused to comply. Dinakaran had been arrested on the night of April 25, after 4 days of questioning for allegedly trying to bribe officials of the Election Commission to get the AIADMK’s ‘two-leaves’ election symbol.
