Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday rejected the allegations of any wrongdoing and said that those who had planted the news against him would be beaten up with shoes. He said that those who had planted his name along with few others in the vigilance report on corruption at the North Eastern electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) would be beaten with shoes if they ever came to his area(Arunachal Pradesh). Rijiju, who is an MP from Tawang reacted to the media reports that he had written a letter to Power Minister Piyush Goyal that sought an early clearing of the bills related to the hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh. Rijiju defended himself by saying that he had written the letter to the Power Minister as it was his duty as an MP to take certain actions on the representations given by his constituents.
The 129-page reports, according to IE claim that Rijiju, Goboi Rijiju, his cousin who is a contractor in AP and several top NEEPCO officials, including the Chairman and MD had been named by PSU’s Chief Vigilance Officer Satish Verma. These papers allege corruption charges in the construction of two dams for 600 MW Kameng Hydroelectric Project. Verma had sent his report to the CBI, CVC and the Ministry of Power, earlier this year.
The reports all an elaborate conspiracy to defraud the NEEPCo and the government funds of up Rs 450 crore. West Kameng, the actual site for the project falls in Arunachal West, which happens to be the parliamentary constituency of Rijiju. According to IE, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made two “surprise checks”, although no FIR has been lodged yet.
