Famous German born American poet, novelist Charles Bukowski very rightly said when he was asked if he hated humans,”I don’t hate them…I just feel better when they’re not around.” Countless thesis, research and literary works have been produced depicting the cruelty of humans towards fellow humans and also to animals. But the later gets discounted or disappears into oblivion from the records.

As if throwing a dog from the rooftop was not enough for experimentation. Four students of the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore have been suspended for torturing a monkey to death on November 19. The incident as reported by Times of India enumerates the grotesque details of how the four medics caught a 12 month old female monkey which landed wanderingly in the hostel and how the four students caught it with a blanket. Little did the one year old monkey knew that this would be her last hop of her life.

The four students not just caught it with a blanket but in a manner of fun games, they tied the monkey’s hands behind it’s back, beat it with objects like sticks and belts and just when they were done with the beating they decided to take it to the next level. They inserted a rod right up the monkey’s anus. When the monlkey died out of excruciating pain the perpetrators of this heinous buried the corpse somewhere behind the men’s mess.

Taking cognisance of the issue the students informed Mumbai based animal activist Meet Ashar who informed his fellow activists in Chennai who reached the spot on November 22 along with officials from the police department, veterinary from the animal husbandry department, forest department and village administration.

As of now the four perpetrators of the crime has been suspended from hostel and the principal Anna Pulimood have strongly condemned the horrifying incident. Though a case has been registered under Section 429 of the IPC and under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, the question is, will this be a deterrent enough.
