In a big relief to the Tamil Nadu film industry and movie-goers, the state government has slashed the entertainment tax to 8 per cent, as per a report by News 18. The move is being seen as an outcome of negotiations between the AIADMK government and the Tamil Film Producers Council over the entertainment tax which was levied in addition to the 28 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on movie tickets. Due to the protest by the industry bodies against the “double taxation”, movie buffs in the state missed out on movies like Vizhithiru, Uruthikol, Kadaisi Bench Karthi, Kalathur Gramam, Thittivasal, Uppu Puli Karam and Azhagin Bommi, as their releases were held back by the industry.

Indian movie industry tracker and co-founder of Cinema Pesalam YT Channel, Ramesh Bala, in a series of Tweets has explained the breakup of the movie ticket price in the AC and non-AC cinema plexes of Tamil Nadu. Here’s how much you will have to pay to watch a movie in Tamil Nadu:

NEW TICKET CHARGES

Multiplex:

Base – 150 + 28% GST – 42 = 192

ET – 8% of 150 = 12 +18% GST on LT = 2.16 Tot – 14.16

Total – 206.16

AC Non-Plex:

Base – 100 + 18% GST – 18 = 118

ET – 8% of 100 = 8 +18% GST on LT = 1.44 Tot – 9.44

Total – 127.44

Non-AC:

Base – 80 + 18% GST – 14.40 = 94.40

ET – 8% of 80 = 6.40 +18% GST on LT = 1.15 Tot – 7.55

Total – 101.95

TAMIL NADU TICKET RATES

The decision has also cleared the way for the release of the much awaited Tamil super-star, Vijay starrer ‘Mersal’. After the decision, the movie-makers are hopeful that the cinemas will witness full occupancy during the holidays of Diwali.
