Presidential Election 2017: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday banished all the reports about she being the contender in the presidential polls. Several names have made the news in the recent weeks including Swaraj. In a report by PTI, she said, “These are rumours. I am an external affairs minister and you are asking me something which is an internal matter.” The other names that are doing the rounds are M.S. Swaminathan and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Mohan Bhagwat.
After the meeting which just lasted for 30 minutes, Yechury told PTI that the two leaders (Rajnath and Venkaiah) did meet at his office but did not propose any name. He added, “a candidate should have impeccable secular credentials,” repeating his party’ stand. Yechury also said that Rajnath Singh and Venkaiah Naidu will again to discuss the same.

The five-year presidential term of Pranab Mukherjee ends next month on July 24 and July 17 is the scheduled date for the election. According to the election commission, June 28 is the last date to submit the nomination of the candidate while a candidate can withdraw the name from the electoral battle before July 1.
