Donald Trump may as well be dead for analysts as far as US Presidential polls are concerned after the release of an extremely sexist and vulgar tape, but in India, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy is willing to take a diametrically opposite stance and is saying that the billionaire businessman is not as bad as he is painted or at least not as much as former US president Bill Clinton, whose wife Hillary is fighting with Trump for the right to get elected as the next President of America.
Peccadilloes of Bill Clinton, while he was president had affected his presidency, but Hillary had refused to leave his side saying, in effect, that she would stand by her man. That part is being taken advantage of by Donald Trump now, but it is not having the desired effect in the face of the strong campaign Hillary, and her husband Bill, are running. In fact, Bill is being credited for quite a lot of the success Hillary has managed to get.
However, despite all the reports and the reactions of people, especially women, against Donald Trump swamping the social media and most other public spaces, Swamy is willing to go out on a limb and speak up for Trump’s chances in the US Presidential elections.
Swamy said, “These allegations don’t stand. Bill Clinton was much worse. I expect Trump to win. He is still in the race.” The BJP leader was speaking to CNN-News18.
The ‘proof’ that made Swamy to come to this conclusion? That Trump had appeared at a presser with as many as 3 women who had accused Bill Clinton of making unsolicited sexual advances. Swamy added, “It shows that Trump is still in the race”.
Even the fact that Trump does not pay his taxes and has in fact not paid any for 18 years is papered over by Swamy. He blames the the US federal law for actually alowing this.
Swamy justified it thus, “Trump has not broken any law. The law which allows such things may be unethical. It may not be correct. But, it is not his mistake. He has used it to his advantage.”
And what of Trump’s Islamophobic diatribes? For Swamy the fact that Trump’s campaign gets funds even from Saudi Arabia, shows he has nothing against Muslims. Swamy said, “These countries fund the elements who make such attacks. They attack everybody. They attacked even me. They made similar charges against me at Harvard. These are vested interests.”
While indicating the fight with Hillary was not going to be a walkover, Swamy said that Trump has a chance and he should never be written off as he has a large portion of the population’s backing.
