Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday revealed details of her relationship with her mother-in-law and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Revealing heartwarming equations, she told India Today that she met Indira first time in London, when she was in a relationship with Rajiv Gandhi. “She was in London, for the opening of the Nehru exhibition, it was 1965. She asked Rajiv to bring me along from Cambridge to meet her. Shortly before I entered the city, I got cold feet,” she said.. “She told me that I was also of your age, and in love, I understand your situation,” she added. Sonia said that she never wanted to join politics, but it was a feeling of  ‘duty towards country, which led her to do so’. “But I had a certain duty towards my husband & my mother in law, to uphold certain values & certain principles,” she said. Talking about Rajiv Gandhi’s decision to join politics, Sonia said that she never wanted her husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to join politics, and she even opposed it openly. “I didn’t want to join politics. I did not want my husband to join politics. He was not keen. He was happy being a pilot,” said Sonia.

Showing her confidence, she said that the Congress party will definetely come up from 44 seats. “I think we will come up from 44 seats to the seats needed to get full majority in Parliament,” she said.

“Indira Gandhi had deep compassion for the people in need. This is missing in politics today,” she added

She said that there is can’t be a comparison between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indira Gandhi. “Absolutely not, there can’t be a comparison between Indira Gandhi and Narendra Modi,” she said. Defending Rahul Gandhi, she said that even Indira Gandhi was made fun of when she entered politics. “More than the outside, Indira was attacked from inside the party,” she said. Revealing inside details of Gandhi family, Sonia said that Indira was completely opposite of how world saw her. “She was very gentle and understanding,”  said Sonia.
