Shiv Sena MLA Anil Parab today demanded that the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) must withdraw its “illegal toll” being levied on those vehicles coming onto airport premises, a PTI report said. In a letter the MLA threatened that the airport may have to face agitation by the party if it didn’t withdraw the toll of Rs 130 per vehicle.

The MLA also objected to parking fee collection from vehicles entering the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. He said that the toll is causing distress to the people as all vehicles which come to the airport, do not stop there, the news agency said further. However, an airport official said that the MIAL did not receive any such letter.

Meanwhile, the GVK-run Mumbai airport has become busiest in the world amongst the single-runway facilities, the PTI said. It handles as many as 837 flights every day or one in 65 seconds on an average in fiscal 2017, more than London’s Gatwick airport, which had 757 flights per day. The report said that the city airport, in terms of a number of passengers too, tops with 45.2 million passengers flying in and out in fiscal 2017 as against 44 million at Gatwick airport. Apart from Mumbai, no other large city is served by only one airport and that too only one runaway.

Apart from this, illegal squatters occupy about one-third of the airport land, the agency report further said. Another airport proposed in Navi Mumbai is yet to come up. All important cities in the world like New York, London, Dubai, and Singapore have airports with over one runways. The airport in the national capital has three runways in use at any given time, the PTI report further said.
