What can only be described as a big success for the state of Haryana, it has emerged that for the first time in 16 years, the state has registered the highest ever child sex ratio in 2017. In last year, 914 girls were born against 1,000 boys. The sex ratio in the state has seen bad figures in the recent past. In 2016, the sex ratio at birth (SRB) was 900 girls against 1,000 boys. And a year prior to that it was even worse with 876 girls in comparison to 1000 boys in 2015. As per the 2011 Census, the child sex ratio in the age group of 0-6 years was the lowest in the country. According to the census, against 1,000 boys born, there were only 834 girls.
According to a report in The Indian Express, the BJP government has proudly announced that, “Out of the 5,09,290 children born in the state during January 2017 to December 2017, 2,66,064 were boys and 2,43,226 were girls. This has marked the improvement in the sex ratio at birth. There has been a considerable jump, from 871 to 914. This marvellous increase of 43 points is seen after the launch of the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
Around 17 districts of the state have achieved SRB of 900 or more. Also, no district in the state has recorded an SRB below 880. With SRB of 945 Panipat tops the list which was followed by Yamunanagar with 943. A sex ratio at 950 is said to be ideal according to officials keeping in mind the perspective of public health. As per 2011 census, districts such as Mohindergarh, Rewari, Sonipat and Jhajjar saw child sex ratio below the 800 mark, but now they have shown remarkable improvement. Mohindergarh has shown improvement of 136, Rewari improved by 91 points, Sonipat improved by 88 point and 96 points improvement was seen by Jhajjar district.
Dr Sonia Trikha, the director of Haryana State Health Resource Centre, said, “There are more girls surviving at birth in Haryana. We now need to focus that they get better nourished and provided opportunities to pursue their dreams.” The officials of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said, “After the launch of the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign Haryana in 2015, the government of the state has carried out many pronged drive to erase the blot of skewed sex ratio in the state.”
