SCO summit: Two Bollywood songs from the golden era received huge applause during lunch hour at Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit on Friday. ‘Awaara Hoon’ and ‘Mera Joota Hai Japani’ were played at the banquet hall in the Palace of Independence, the SCO summit venue. The world leaders hailed the two songs where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had gone to represent India. “Both the songs were played during the lunch and they received wide applause,” a diplomat said. ‘Awara Hoon’ is a 1951 classic song from the movie Awaara, starring Raj Kapoor, while Mera Joota Hai Japani is a popular number from the 1955 film Shree 420 that also had Kapoor. Bollywood is not new to audience abroad, the film Awaara, was also nominated for the Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. The song Awaara on the other hand, is also in the list of ‘Global Bollywood travels of Hindi song and dance’. Mera Joota Hai Japani, is a memorable song and evokes nostalgia in a number of foreign coountries. The song recently did the same to many when the American superhero film Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds used this iconic song. Ryan makes his entry in the film with Mera Joota Hai Japani playing in the background.
News18 also reported that Chinese president Xi Jinping on Friday on the sidelines of the SCO summit met with Modi and expressed his ‘love’ for Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal, which was recently released in China. Jinping said he wants to see more such movies released in China in the future. Dangal, and PK broke many box office records this year in countries like US and China.
