As the Sardar Sarovar Dam, the largest dam of the Narmada Valley Project overflowed at 122 meters following heavy inflow of water, the Gujarat tourism grabbed the opportunity and published special advertisements on social media to attract tourists from across the states to witness the ‘White water’ flowing from the Dam. According to the officials, satisfactory security measures have been made to handle the rush of the tourists.
According to the Dam authorities the water which was supposed to be at the level of 121.92 was at 121.23 on Friday evening. The dam on Narmada River in South Gujarat started overflowing the height of the dam at 3 am on Saturday morning. The water inflow currently is recorded to be over 1.74 lakhs against the outflow of 67,997 cusecs.
In a statement to PTI Superintending engineer of Sardar Sarovar Nrmada Nigam Ltd (SSNL), Rajendra G Kanungo said, “Water level at Sardar Sarovar dam has reached 122.40 metres and is likely to increase up to 125.20 metres by tomorrow night,”.
The last incident of the overflow of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, one of the largest dam of the Narmada Valley Project was seen in 2014. This is the first incident of the overflowing of the dam since the installation of gates by Narendra Modi government.
Considered the life line of Gujarat, the Sardar Sarovar Dam irrigates more than 18,000 km sq, most of it areas of Kutch and Saurashtra.
