Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Elections, the Samajwadi Party has drawn attention to itself by a series of rejigs that hint at a discord between its part members. On Friday, the party supremo Mulayam Singh, asserted that there can be no division in the party till he is there. What seems to be an attempt towards reconciliation, Gayatri Prasad Prajapti will be re-inducted in the UP cabinet. Meanwhile, two departments- medical education and minor irrigation that were controlled by Shivpal Yadav, have been returned to him by Akhilesh.
“We have a big family, differences may occur… There is no fight between Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh,” said the Samjwadi Party supremo on Friday, adding that Mr. Akhilesh Yadav will meet Mr. Shivpal Yadav at his residence.
In his 18-minute speech to party workers, Mulayam said that Akhilesh could not ignore his decisions. “When I ran the government three times as chief minister, was Akhilesh there? When I became defence minister in 1996, was Akhilesh there?”
The feud had spilled into the open after the Chief Minister stripped Shivpal of key ministerial portfolios on September 13, hours after he was replaced with Shivpal as the party’s state unit chief by Mulayam. Mulayam’s cousin and SP’s national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, who is seen as backing the Chief Minister, yesterday said the leadership had committed an unintentional “mistake” by removing Akhilesh as party’s UP president.
He blamed “outsiders” for the crisis, an apparent reference to Amar Singh who recently returned to the party after a number of years.
“Portfolios will be given back to Mr. Shivpal Singh Yadav,” Akhilesh tweeted about his uncle who was stripped of his key ministries only two days back by the Chief Minister, triggering all out war during which Akhilesh was removed as party’s state unit chief. In another tweet, the CM said, “Gayatri Prajapati will be inducted in the cabinet.”
Setting in motion the reconciliation process, Mulayam as well as Akhilesh earlier rejected Shivpal’s resignation from the Cabinet as well as the head of state party unit, to which he was appointed two days ago replacing Akhilesh. Shivpal had resigned last night as a minister and as state party unit head.
