A day following Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 rupee notes, he seems to have lost over 3 lakh followers on Twitter. The prime Minister, on November 8 at around 10 pm, made a shocking announcement and said that in order to curb the flow of black money, stop corruption and tax evasion, the government had decided to ban the use of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes from midnight.
Modi had said that people could exchange their old notes for new at banks, post offices till the end of 2016. They could also deposit them in their accounts. While the government received a lot of praise for taking a bold step to stop corruption, it also received a lot of flak for the inconvenience it caused to the common folk. The banks and ATMs had been declared shut for the next two days to replenish them with the new currency. Once the banks opened on Thursday, huge crowds of people were seen flocking outside these establishments. While some banks in Delhi have already received the new Rs 2000 bills, it is still unsure as to how many banks in rural areas have been replenished.
It was noted that a day after the announcement was made by PM Modi, his Twitter handle lost 3,13,312 followers according to the Twitter counter. PM Modi, official Twitter handle @narendramodi has over 24 million followers. Although, after losing over 3 lakh followers, he had gained 4,30,128 followers a day later. Although if this was a glitch on the part of twitter is yet to be known.
