While Congress on Tuesday eveing offered mixed reactions on banning of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 from midnight, West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has called the sudden stem “ a drama”. Giving his party’s reaction Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, while expressing support for the move on the huge affect it is meant to curb the black money, he however, slammed the government for announcing that it would come out with Rs 2,000.

He added that the Congress has always supported any move against black money and will continue to do so. Randeep Surjewala, also expressed concern for farmers or families that have weddings in few days and said that the step would move a huge burden on them by putting limit on how much money can be withdrawn.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing that the government would soon release and circulate Rs 2,000 notes, the Congress spokesman argued that the government on one hand is cancelling Rs 1,00 but is introducing Rs 2,000 notes, which might defeat his own argument on curbing the black money from the nation. He further expressed concern that those who have habit of collecting black money, will now be able to stash even more money.

Calling the stem as “a drama”, Mamata Banerjee said that since Prime Minister Narendra Modi could not bring black money from abroad as he had promised earlier, the later was doing this to divert the attention of the people.

“I want to know from PM how my poorest brothers sisters, who’ve received their week’s hard earned wage in one 500 rupee note will buy atta, chai tomorrow? Heartless and ill- conceived blow on the common people and the middle class in the fake name of anti-corruption,” Ms. Banerjee tweeted.
