While a majority of people are struggling in the aftermath of demonetization, former BJP minister in Karnataka, Gali Janardhan Reddy, has caught the attention of Income Tax officials after his daughter’s wedding cost over Rs. 100 crore. Among the 50,000 guests invited to the event were Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, State Home Minister G Parameshwara, Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, Rural Development Minister H K Patil and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa. Some BJP stalwarts, however, skipped the wedding, given Reddy’s arrest in 2012 in illegal mining cases. Former minister Suresh Kumar, however, refuted the claim that the BJP had advised its members to keep away from the wedding, saying, “It is a private function and there is no official directive on it.’’
Since his release on bail last year, Reddy was busy planning his daughter’s nuptials that took place at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Brahmani Reddy tied the knot with Rajeev Reddy, son of Panyam Vikram Deva Reddy, an Andhra Pradesh businessman with mining interests in Africa. There was considerable celebrity presence at the wedding with guests like Punith Raj Kumar, Ravichandran, Vishal Krishna, Suman, Sharath Babu and performances from Telugu stars Rakul Preet and comedian Brahmanand and Kannada star Yash at the reception.
IT officials have already examined the costs of the wedding and additional investigations will be carried out soon. The Reddy family has maintained, however, that the costs were only Rs. 30 crore.
