Amidst increasing demand of reservation in government jobs and education by people of different castes across the country, Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale wants to put an end to all such demands by providing 25% reservation to economically weaker sections of upper castes across the country. Athawale says that reservation will never end in the country even as some people are opposed to the very idea of it. The only solution, according to him, is by extending the reservation benefit to poor people belonging to the upper castes as well.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of National Council of Senior Citizens in New Delhi on Tuesday, Athawale said that forward castes people deriving an annual income upto Rs 6 lakh should be provided reservation in jobs and education. “For this, reservations should be increased by another 25% so that the existing quota for SC, ST and OBC remains unaffected,” The Indian Express reported him as saying.

The RPI (A) leader from Maharashtra plans to take up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah soon. He said that issue can be discussed in the Parliament and a Constitutional amendment proposal could also be moved in both Houses as social justice demands welfare of the economically backward people among the upper castes as well.

According to Athawale, his proposal may end agitations for reservation in the country forever. “Once this happens there will be no agitation for reservation and I am saying this despite being from Dalit community as there are economically weaker classes in all castes,” PTI reported him as saying.

Athawale’s statement could boost BJP’s prospects in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Assembly elections in the state early next year, if he manages to take up the issue with the PM and raise the issue in the Parliament.

In recent years, several agitations have been carried out across the country by people from diferent castes such as Jat, Gujjar, Rajout, Maratha, Patel. Athawale said that all these including the poor Brahmins should get reservation benefits.

Athawale also suggested an alternative to his proposal, that is by distributing reservation benefits among citizens according to their percentage in the country’s population. At present the government of India provides 15%, 7.5% and 27% reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs respectively.
