In a new development, the Railways has planned to increase the number of train services in the suburban railways service in Mumbai. While talking to journalists, Member (Traffic) of the Railway Board said that around 80 new trains will be added to suburban railways by the Central Railways and Western Railways from October, as reported by The Indian Express. As per the figures, presently, CR and WR offer 1,600 services and 1,290 services respectively. “The CR division will see another three-dozen service in the new timetable and WR division will also see an equal number, on a daily basis. Among the 2.4 crore travellers on the Indian Railways, the Mumbai suburban section carries 85 lakh a day, nearly a 50 per cent contribution to passenger traffic on the railways,” The Indian Express quoted Mohamed Jamshed as saying.
Talking about the development plans, Jamshed said “The suburban network has almost become the largest network in the world to see such high sums of investment in projects. Almost Rs 60,000 crore worth of projects have been given for development work, which is huge,” The Indian Express quoted him as saying. Apart from this, there will be an increase in the passenger capacity as well. “We discussed whether services could be introduced with more number of coaches. Like CR sees a 15-coach train but we explored similar possibilities on WR.
We also discussed how headway can be reduced further and decided to increase services in areas with more traffic movement,” Jamshed said. In addition to that, the special privilege will be given to stations like Kalyan and Kasara on CR and Dahanu road on WR. These stations will be offered more services.
