In a massive setback to former Union finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted raids at their residences and other establishments in Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and other places across India. The raids were conducted as a part of an inquiry into the suspected criminal misconduct related to the approval of investment deals. Soon after the news started making headlines, several Congress leaders stepped in to defend Chidambaram and they alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was looking to spoil the reputation of the former Finance Minister.
Speaking to ANI about the same, Congress leader from Tamil Nadu Peter Alphonse said, “If Congress had adopted same tactic that BJP is doing today then there would be no other political party in India today.”
Earlier in the day, other Congress leaders too spoke up in Chidambaram’s defense including Karate R. Thiagarajan. He said, “They just want to damage P Chidambaram’s reputation because he is a voice against the Narendra Modi-led government.”
Party leader K R Ramasamy dismissed the reports that the former Union minister was involved in any illegalities and instead subscribed to the vendetta theory. Speaking to ANI, Ramasamy said, “Chidambaram has done nothing wrong, these raids are politically motivated.”

Reacting to the allegations and charges made against him, P Chidambaram had earlier accused the ruling BJP government of stopping him from writing or saying something against it. He said, “Government wants to stop me from writing, as it has tried to with leaders of opposition parties, journalists, columnists, NGOs and civil society.”
He added further, “Every case processed according to law and approval granted or refused in accordance with FIPB recommendations consisting of 5 GOI Secretaries.”
As per NDTV report, CBI sources said that it is investigating the case following a police complaint against Karti that his company received Rs 10 lakh from INX Media, which got Foreign Exchange Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for 4 crore, but actually received Rs 305 crore. INX Media was owned by former media baron Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani who are currently in jail in connection with the murder of daughter the later’s daughter Sheena Bhora.
