Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday slammed NDA government on its demonetisation step, saying that it has weakened the economy of the country. Speaking at a function in Chennai, organised to mark the 60 years of DMK leader M Karunanidhi’s service as an MLA in the state, who also turned 94 today, he alleged, “World is saying demonetization has wrecked our economy. What Arun Jaitley isn’t telling is PM won’t even ask him about demonetisation,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

“We will not let RSS and Narendra Modi impose one idea in the country. We will  never allow silencing of more than billion Indian voices.” the agency quoted him further as saying

The Congress vice president, while praising Karunanidhi’s service to the state, said, “When Karunanidhi speaks, it isn’t only he is speaking, when he opens mouth it is the voice of people of Tamil Nadu that he is speaking,” ANI added further.

According to PTI, apart from Rahul Gandhi, the function was attended by several top leaders including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, CPI(M) and CPI General Secretaries Sitaram Yechury and S Sudhakar Reddy, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’ Brien and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, among others. However, Karunanidhi, the man himself, was not available due to health reasons.
Karunanidhi’s health did not let him be wheel-chaired in rge dais which was designed as state Secretariat.

The former chief minister’s absence was not surprising as DMK working president and his son MK Stalin had earlier stated that his father’s participation was subject to doctors’ approval. He had made his Assembly debut in 1957 from Kulithalai in then undivided Tiruchirappally.

In the meantime, a video has gone viral on social media showing Karunanidhi’s daughter Selvi cutting a birthday cake and feeding him and his wife Dayalu.
