Following speculations that Rahul Gandhi would be joining the cross-party delegation led by Home Minister Rajnath Singh to attend the pre-funeral commemoration of iconic communist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, it had been made clear that the Congress vice-president would be attending the Parliamentary sessions instead. Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma would be representing the party at the pre-funeral ceremony instead of Gandhi.
With a good relation with the Nehru-Gandhi family, Fidel Castro had earlier met former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in several occassions. The former President of Cuba had died on November 26, at the age of 90. Being world’s third longest-serving head of state, after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and the King of Thailand, the iconic communist leader led Cuba for five decades.
With political leaders representing various parties including Congress, CPI(M), CPI and Samajwadi party, the delegation led by Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be leavining to attend the pre-funeral ceremony in Havana on Monday and is expected to return on Thursday.
Amid political uproar in the Parliamentary houses, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be attending the winter sessions, to discuss demonetisation, instead of the pre-funeral ceremony of the revolutionary leader of Cuba. Following the implementation of the demonetisation policy by the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, political storm erupted across the country with both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha witnessing repeated adjournments, hindering the normal proceedings of the parliamentary winter sessions.
