Rahul Gandhi is set to become the Congress party president after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) unanimously supported a proposal in this regard today. “Congress Working Committee members unanimously support Rahul Gandhi’s elevation to being President of Congress Party,” ANI reported.

Rahul Gandhi today chaired the Congress Working Committee meeting as his mother and party president skipped the meet reportedly due to poor health.

Rahul Gandhi, who was expected to take over as the Congress president soon, used the CWC platform to make a series of attacks against the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The range of issues he talked about included OROP issue, laws, MGNREGA and communal polarisation.

Talking about Indian soldiers and the One Rank, Once Pension (OROP) issue, Rahul said, “In recent months, our jawans have suffered the highest casualties in decades. They are being cruelly ‘rewarded’ by a callous government with denial of OROP and cut in disability pensions.”

Attacking the Centre further, he said, “asking questions is what discomforts this (NDA) government the most, for they have no answers.” Rahul Gandhi claimed that Modi government is obsessed with power and seeks to silence all those who disagree. “Attempts by the government to suppress fundamental freedoms by abusing state power will only strengthen our resolve to defeat such dangerous designs.”

Rahul apprehended that with the state elections due in coming months, the Modi government would launch “a campaign of disinformation and polarisation.” “They (BJP) will exploit caste and religious fault lines. We must anticipate and neutralise such devious strategies.”

Rahul also accused the BJP-ruled states of actively diluting and undermining the laws passed by the Parliament. He pointed out the Land Acquisition Act and the Real Estate Legislation as examples.

Attacking the Modi government further, Rahul said, “The Modi government is lobbying with states via informal channels to deny work under MGNREGA to the very poor.”

An ANI report said that the meeting was called to decide on extending the deadline for the completion of the party’s organisational elections which were to be completed by December 31.

The meeting was significant ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, which is starting from November 16. The Congress reportedly finalised its strategy for the session in the meeting today

There have been repeated suggestions that Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi should take over reins of the party from his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi and the CWC is likely to take a call on that issue today as well.
