Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in order to meet the affected family members, today reached Una town in Gujarat where violent mob protests have emerged, following the incident where some Dalit youths were beaten and thrashed, allegedly for skinning a corpse of a cow. As Gujarat continues to boil over the assaults on Dalits, the issue is being politicised by all the parties. A policeman has been killed in the raging violence by the mob while many Dalit are attempting to commit suicide in order to protest against the incident, whose video went viral.

Meanwhile Rahul Gandhi who is visiting Una today, was found to be dozing off in the Parliament yesterday, especially when the issue of assault on Dalits was being raised. Former UP CM Mayawati, who was abused by the a BJP leader had said that Rahul sleeping depicts his lazy attitude towards the sensitive issue. Large scale protests have now been triggered after seven Dalit youths belonging to the Mota Samadhilya village of Gir-Somnath district were thrashed. This was followed by several incidents of attempted suicide as a form of protest.

The victims who got thrashed have claimed the cow that they were skinning, was not killed by them, instead it died naturally. Meanwhile Sonia Gandhi in Congress’ parliamentary meet had accused BJP government of ignoring and taking away the rights of the Dalits.
