Chief Minister Amarinder Singh while speaking at an event ‘Rising Punjab’ on Thursday evening said that it is time that Rahul Gandhi take over as the chief of Congress. He added that Rahul is open to ideas and will do a good job in leading the party. Talking about the problem of drugs in the state, he said the prices of drugs in the state have gone up by 60% due to lack of supply since his party took over which is a major step to deal with the problem of drug addiction. He added that the government has ‘broken the back’ of drugs trade. there has been an increase in rehab centres in the state but the problem is that people are hesitant in going to rehab centres and that is why they prefer going to private hospitals, he added.
The Punjab CM said that the biggest problem facing Punjab is unemployment and the state cannot be prosperous if it remains predominantly focused on farming. “Punjab cannot be prosperous if it remains agrarian. Focus on making Punjab more industrial,” Amarinder Singh was quoted as saying by CNN News 18. The senior Congress leader also clarified that this will be his last stint as the Chief Minister of Punjab as he has no plans of contesting elections again.
Earlier, in the day, the Congress revealed its new-look team with eye on 2019 polls. The party is currently reworking its strategy after continuous attacks on its leadership, keeping in mind the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Taking a big step in that direction, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala appointed a new-look team including 17 new office bearers out of which 10 are under the age of 50. Pritam Singh has been appointed as the new Uttarakhand Congress president and will replace Kishore Upadhyay while former state minister Sunil Jakhar will take charge as new Punjab Congress chief.
Congress won 77 seats under Captain Amarinder Singh in the state assembly elections earlier this year and formed the government. The party won with a massive margin with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) finishing on the second spot having bagged 20 seats.
