The Vatican will shelter two families of refugees who are ”fleeing death” from war or hunger, Pope Francis announced Sunday as he called on Catholic parishes, convents and monasteries across Europe to do the same.

Francis cited Mother Teresa, the European-born nun who cared for the poorest in India, in making his appeal in remarks to pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter’s Square.

”Faced with the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees who are fleeting death by war and by hunger, and who are on a path toward a hope for life, the Gospel calls us to be neighbors to the smallest and most abandoned, to give them concrete hope,” Frances said.

It’s not enough to say ”Have courage, hang in there,” he added.

`’May every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe host a family, starting with my diocese of Rome,” Francis said. He also asked bishops throughout Europe to have their dioceses take up his call to `’express the Gospel in concrete terms and take in a family of refugees.”

The Vatican is a tiny city-state and some of its citizens, including families with children, live in apartments inside its ancient walls. It has two parish churches, including St. Peter’s Basilica.

Francis said two of the Vatican’s parishes will welcome two refugee families, but did not give details. A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini, quoted the pope’s chief alms-giver as saying the Vatican is now deciding which families will be hosted.

He has chosen mercy as the overarching theme of his papacy. Practicing what he preaches, he has already made free showers at the Vatican available to Rome’s homeless and has barbers available for haircuts for the needy, among other initiatives.

Thousands of migrants and refugees, many fleeing war and persecution, have streamed into Germany and Austria over the weekend after being stuck in Hungary for days.

Despite being huge, if they can't actually handle more than 2 families, they could certainly put more of them up somewhere... I haven't heard of any Muslim theocracies stepping up to help. Any idea why? (Not counting Jordan & Lebanon.)

he's advocating taking 11,000 roaches and spreading them into homes and churches? I believe he has gone totally senile. He should be focusing his pseudo-holy political office on the Christian murders and atrocities inflicted on innocent Christians. This guy is a total PHONEY.

It's about time! With all the money these *men* am in the name of God, and being the richest of all religious groups, finally they give some back but it's definitely not enough. Keep practicing your religion and do what it says instead of cherry 🍒 picking.

Christian communities around Europe are taking in people of different cultures and different religions. Amazing. At the same time though, Syrian and Iraqi refugees are asking why the wealthy Arab Gulf countries are not doing nearly as much?

The Vatican actually has limited infrastructure to host families. It's the example of Christian support, that the Pope is demonstrating. Not a total solution.

How about you sell some of that gold and other riches and support a of a lot more than 2 families!

The Vatican has plenty of infrastructure to aggize the Catholic hierarchy -- filched over centuries from the poor who the church has feasted on.

If only one percent of these are islamic terrorists? An unknown percent will be criminals, and there are a lot of free, equal and liberated Western women that are going to be brutally raped. Western Civilization has indeed become suicidally insane. There is going to be a vast amount of suffering and economic burden resulting from letting these refugees in, and there is no reasonable or logical reason to welcome them.

I think the European parishes and other Catholic organizations will follow what the Pope is asking because of their love, faith and piety. Do not be surprise when you see the rest of the world's Catholics reach out to help financially and with material goods, the efforts that our European brethren have been call to make.

Keep the children of these refugee families away from the priests. The w world knows now what happens to children who are alone in a room with a Catholic priest. (BTW, I was raised Catholic, but I woke up!)

if the refugees were all young boys the church would find room for them.
