Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to break his “deafening silence” on religious intolerance, The New York Times said in an editorial today.

A day after President Barack Obama had said that religious “intolerance” in India would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi, the newspaper’s

Editorial Board asked in an editorial titled ‘Modi’s Dangerous Silence’, “What will it take for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak out about the mounting violence against India’s religious minorities?”

“Mr Modi needs to break his deafening silence on religious intolerance,” it said.

The attacks at Christian places of worship have prompted “no response” from the man elected to represent and to protect all of India’s citizens, the editorial observed, adding that nor has the Prime Minister addressed the “conversion” to Hinduism of Christians and Muslims.

“Mr Modi’s continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right,” it added.

“Mr Modi has promised an ambitious agenda for India’s development. But, as President Obama observed in a speech in New Delhi last month: ‘India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith'”.

Obama yesterday said the “acts of intolerance” experienced by religious faiths of all types in India in the past few years would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi.

The comments by Obama came a day after the White House refuted suggestions that the US President’s public speech in New Delhi on January 27 during his India visit in which he touched upon religious tolerance was a “parting shot” aimed at the ruling BJP.

“Michelle and I returned from India – an incredible, beautiful country, full of magnificent diversity – but a place where, in past years, religious faiths of all types have, on occasion, been targeted by other peoples of faith, simply due to their heritage and their beliefs – acts of intolerance that would have shocked Gandhiji, the person who helped to liberate that nation,” Obama said in his remarks at the high-profile National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

The US President, who has just returned from India, was referring to violence against followers of various religions in India in the past few years.

He, however, did not name any particular religion and said the violence is not unique to one group or one religion.

Modi should break his silence and say that Christian evangelist should stop converting poor Hindus and Tribals by fraud. He should also mention that govt will take strict action against those foreign donors who fund charity to NGO's in India to convert people to Christianity.

I agree with the views of Manoj Kumar. Modi and Amit Shah are tool of RSS and planning to rewrite the history of India.

Prime Minister Modi need not make any statement just please NYT or Obama. India is a vast country of more than 100crore people and so many instances are happening. He is heading a democratically elected government and treating all people of all faiths equal. He is responsible if his government does any wrong, he is answerable to the parliament and the country. During previous regime of sonia no. of instances criminal in nature happened but nobody asked her to give a statement.

What Mr. Obama stated is correct. It is only christian missionaries in India who are most intolerant towards majority Hindus so, they have been organising m conversion of Hindus to christianity through various means by using support from international missionary net work. Missionaries have built up property worth billions of Dollars.

Modi knows that if he talks against the sangh parivaar, he may have to go back to gujarat and that the parivaar may also ask anandibehn not to vacate her chair. Modi is too clever to do anything as foolish as offending the parivaar, obama or no obama.

Excellency Narendra.D.Modi's silence on many social issues such as violence against women, insecurity for women and children, the large number of missing children and women, religious intolerances and attack against place of worship of minorities and the media hyped "Khar Vaapazi"; All these are very very worrisome. People are tempted to interpreted his silence as tantamount to pive "acceptance" and probably culpable connivance. This has already started to bother all Indians inside and outside India. Delhi elections are sure open his eye, I hope !!!

So when people freely convert to Hinduism, it is a bad thing, but when people are forced from Hinduism to Christianity, not a single paper bring it up. Talk about utter hypocrisy. Financial express needs to talk about the forced conversions of Hindus under congress for over 60 years. And also bring up the mistreatment of Hindus in the middle east and the lack of secularism, pluralism, or democracy in the middle east.

It is looking at the life and Service of Christians many are converted to Christianity. These Rss rats are brainwashed By dirty political and so called religious Leaders for their personal gains. They are Simply for no reason targetting Christians. Where there is cristianity there is progress And justice to the pdople

Religion has become a biggest concern of intolerance in our country. After uming power by BJP at center ,many minconceptions raised from saffron society,RSS and BJP leaders which disturbed common citizens. But it was much more disturbed by uncomfortable silence of PM on this matter. Finally PM broke his silence on Barak Obama's statement on religion intolerance.

Is Mr Obama's concern, out of the blue, because of the attacks on Christians their churches or has he been concerned about this throughout? As of the now, the authorities have not been able to ign any pattern to these attacks, attacks of these kind, burglary in places of worship, including hindu temples, keep taking place, as of now it is not clear if churches have been specifically targeted. But the more pertinent question is, why doesn't Obama call into question the attacks on minorities (Hindus) in stan, they have been reduced into nothingness in Punjab, FATA and Baluchistan in stan, only some semblance remains in Karachi and the province of Sind. After all, stan is so close to his heart and his strategic interests. We would also like to draw his attention to Bangladesh, where the Hindus are now a minuscule minority, where they face all kinds of imaginable cution. Why not a word or two about the pitiable state of affairs of the Hindus in stan and Bangladesh, Mr Obama? When the VHP organises a Ghar Wapsi, which is within the legal parameters of the consution, everyone seems to have a problem, but when stan and Bangladesh torture Hindus into conversion to Islam, it finds no mention anywhere, be it the New York Times or the Obama times. Why?

President Obama can talk for christians, like he did. But in a secular country like India ,Is it right for PM to make a statement supporting a religion ?

the New York times. They are a bunch of hypocrites and are a state controlled newspaper. The US is a country founded on genocide, had blacks as slaves and committed innumerable war crimes to further its interests and weapons s. Where were they when Hindus were being converted by the evangelists by coercion and inducements? Where were they when the Muslims in stan and Bangladesh killed, converted or drove away Hindus? As long as the evil religions of Islam and Christianity are around, the world will not know any peace. Jai Hind and America.

Stop the bakwas of majority and minority. Treat every one as Indian and human and don't play victim for personal benefits. I think too much of hype created on this to aculate foreign fund to amaze wealth playing victim in India. No country outside has this much religious freedom as in India. So far Modi has done only good for Indians as a PM. Leave the comments from some rotten minds as they are not governing India. If they violated any law, approach court and get the justice.Fed up with this nonsense spreading... I feel the Indian news papers still live in the colonial slavery age and highlight the things in foreign media and leaders. Come up with own articles

Interestingly none of the American presidents, not to talk about Obama's concern about religious freedom; have spoken against religious cution in stan. Don't he know that religious minorities in stan were systematically eliminated by Islamic religious fanatics with tacit approval from Govt. Whether he don't know or acting ignorance about this.
