Narendra Modi visit to Germany: PM meets German Chancellor Angela Merkel for dinner at Schloss Meseberg

Both leaders are expected to discuss the issues of mutual interest in an informal setting over dinner at the 18th-century palace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Schloss Meseberg, a venue near the country’s capital Berlin. Both leaders are expected to discuss the issues of mutual interest in an informal setting over dinner at the 18th-century palace. Press Trust of India reported that two leaders enjoyed the sunshine with a walk in the grounds of palace. “The bonds of a fruitful partnership. Chancellor Merkel receives Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Schloss Messeberg before a private dinner,” said a Ministry of External Affairs statement.

While dinner will be an informal setting, Modi will receive military honours at the Chancellery on Tuesday. Soon after the military honour, the prime minister will hold talks with Merkel as part of the fourth round of the bi-annual India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations [IGC]. The last IGC was held in New Delhi in October 2015 when, German Chancellor Merkel visited India.

The two head of nations are also expected to sign a host of agreements during the meet. A number of crucial international issues – situation in the South China sea, China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative and the growing threat of terrorism are expected to be discussed during the meet. Modi and Merkel are also scheduled to hold a luncheon meeting with senior business leaders before inaugurating the Indo-German Business Forum. “I am confident that this visit will open a new chapter in our bilateral cooperation with Germany and further deepen our strategic partnership,” Modi said before embarking on the visit.

The Prime Minister added that he and Merkel will “chart out a future roadmap of cooperation with focus on trade and investment, security and counter-terrorism, innovation and science and technology, skill development, urban infrastructure, railways and civil aviation, clean energy, development cooperation, health and alternative medicine.” Modi further described Germany as a valuable partner, the prime minister said, “German competencies fit well with my vision for India’s transformation.”
