Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated the Manipur unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its victory in Rajya Sabha elections, an ANI report said. Taking to Twitter to express his happiness, the prime minister said, “Was delighted at BJP winning its first ever Rajya Sabha seat from Manipur by a big margin. Congrats to the Manipur’s BJP and nominee of BJP Bhabhananda Singh.”
In another tweet, the prime minister said he was honoured that the BJP and the NDA got an historic opportunity to serve the people of the North-East. “I feel honoured that BJP and NDA are getting a historic opportunity to fulfill aspirations of Northeast at so many forums, locally and nationally,” he said in another tweet.
BJP candidate K Bhabananda defeated Congress’ E Dwijamani by 18 votes in the House of 60. By-election for the Upper House seat was required after the death of then sitting Rajya Sabha MP from Congress, Abdul Salam earlier this year.
As per news agency, one polling agent each of political parties BJP, the Nagas People Front (NPF), the National People’s Party (NPP), Congress and the the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), were seated in the polling booth. During the voting, ballot papers were used. All MLAs showed to polling agents that they had voted for the candidate of their party, before putting papers in ballot box, ANI said. While Bhabananda got 39 votes, his Congress rival, Dwijamani received 21 votes, added the report.

Earlier on Monday, the Election Commission had deferred Rajya Sabha elections to 10 seats in Gujarat, Goa and West Bengal that were scheduled for June 8, an Indian Express report said.
In a brief statement, the poll panel had said it was withdrawing the earlier press note of May 16 announcing the polls for Rajya Sabha seats from the three states. the panel had also said it would announce fresh dates “in due course”. Terms of several senior Rajya Sabha members, including Union minister Smriti Irani, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien and CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury will end in July and August, the report added.
