In a major news, Pathankot airbase in Punjab has been put on high alert. According to the reports, the decision was taken after a suspicious activity was reported and a search operation is currently underway. However, no official statement has been released by the authorities as to why the airbase has been put on alert.
An attack was carried out on the Pathankot airbase in 2016 as well. National Investigation Agency (NIA) issued a charge sheet to it late and gave detailed information on the Pathankot airbase attack planned by Jaish-e-Mohammad’s (JeM) Shahid Latif. The NIA names Latif, Jaish chief Maulana Masood Azhar and his brother Mufti Abdul Rauf Asghar along with Kashif Jan in its charge sheet. NIA gathered information from a witness who said that the attackers were shown the Pathankot airbase on Google maps. The witness also said that the attackers were “very talkative” and boasted about their association with Jaish-e-Mohammad Jihadist group and talked about the motivation provided by Jaish chief, Masood Achar.

Further, the NIA chargesheet explains the modus operandi of the terrorists saying they ”specifically targeted fuel tanks of the vehicles parked in the Motor Transport Section setting them on fire, causing severe damage to the vehicles and the buildings, so as to cause panic.” During the operation carried out by the security forces including the NSG and Army, to flush out the terrorists, seven persons were martyred and 37 persons were injury.
