Responding to the recent increase in infiltration bids from the Pakistan side of the Line of Control, the Indian Army had struck a Pakistani forward post in Naushera sector, for which a video was released on Tuesday. Calling for proactive counter-terrorism operations in order to maintain peace and stability in Jammu-Kashmir, Major General Ashok Narula, in a media briefing, said that infiltration activities must be curbed as they might negatively influence the youth in the area. Meanwhile, many defense and security experts in India have hailed the attack saying that the Pakistani Army ‘has been taught a lesson’. A video released by the Army showed a Pakistani post being bombarded with artillery fire. Responding to the development, Pakistan Army Spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor termed the allegations as ‘false’.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley came out in support of the Indian Army. He said that the Indian Government supports the actions of Indian Army across LoC and such actions are necessary to ensure peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Saying that the Indian Army has been proactively dominating the LoC region, Narula had added that locations aiding infiltration of terrorists have been identified and destroyed. He added that the Pakistani Army has been providing support to armed infiltrators by engaging our forward troops from their weapon emplacements and pillboxes closer to the Line of Control. At times they have not even hesitated to target villages in the proximity of Line of Control.

Here is how Defense experts reacted to Indian Army’s attack on the Pakistani post:

What Ex-Army Chief, Gen Bikram Singh told news channel Republic TV:

Pakistani army calls the shots in Pakistan. The Pakistani army has been taught a lesson. The video that has been released is going to hit them hard. The attack is a shot in the arm for the Indian armed forces and the army knows that the govt is in support of their action

What former Chief of Army Staff, General Shankar Roychowdhury told news channels CNBC and Republic TV:

Army targeted and destroyed locations aiding infiltration of terrorists. We are always prepared for a response from the Pakistani Army, there is nothing new in that. Meanwhile, we will carry out our plans. Lt. Ummer Fayaz was a shining example as opposed to traitor Burhan Wani. The strike signals a return to our roots – to a book called ‘Arthashastra’

On the question, if such strikes will escalate?: We are prepared for an escalation, no doubt of that. The attack is a decision of the Indian government, and is not connected to the US’s current stance where various Middle Eastern countries are under threat as the flag of terror has been raised.

What Defense Expert Commodore (retd.) GJ Singh told news channel CNBC:

Will look at India’s attack on Pak posts as part of its change of strategy. Regular firing keeps taking place around the LOC, but this attack seems to be a change in strategy of the Indian Army. This attack is like putting Pakistan on notice. It is an example of Army’s might and muscle. We have to do an assessment of the Pakistani Army; its mindset is that of an extremist.

What Col. (retd.) VN Thapar, father of Kargil hero Vijayant Thapar said told news channel Republic TV:

We should not allow Pakistan to build those posts again. We need to get firm on Kashmir as well. It is a psychological advantage which gets us from reactive mode to a proactive one. This move needs to be supplemented, complemented with more actions whenever there is a provocation. This side of the LoC has a friendly population and they are being punished. This one action will not deter them. Continuous attacks are necessary.

Am out and col.Thapar. We must not scale down our operations against our notorious neighbour. At the same time we must also scale up our diplomatic strategy with the support and back drop of world situations under constant threat IsIs e.g. Manchester attack in England.
