Former Union Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti’s residences in Chennai were raided by a team of CBI officials. The development has evoked sharp reactions from across political spectrum of the country. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has launched a scathing attack on the former Finance Minister, saying, “Chidambaram has to be in jail,” according to Times Now report. Flaying Chidambaram over the raids, Swamy claimed that the former Union Home Minister had given Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval which was illegal according to the rules and law, the TV report says. “Once these illegal approvals were given, then Karti went and collected and in the process in 18 countries he has bank accounts, properties and houses,” he told Times Now. He said, “Recently I was in London. I found he has two big houses in City of Cambridge in their own names.” “So there was no other alternative but to find what evidences are in his houses and other places,” he said.

The raids began early this morning. Apart from the residences of father-son duo, CBI officials carried out raids at several locations across India. It has been learned that searches were conducted in connection with alleged favours granted in FIPB clearance to a firm. The searches were spread across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Gurugram, according to PTI report.

The agency had recently registered a case regarding Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to a company in which it is alleged that favours were given when P Chidambaram was the finance minister.

Asked about the raids, the former union minister said, “You should have called your CBI friends…….Should I stop writing ? (against the government).” “I mean…(this is) absolute nonsense,” Chidambaram told PTI adding he was not in Chennai.

Chidambaram has also accused the Narendra Modi government of ‘silencing’ his ‘voice’. Chidambaram also claimed, “Government by using CBI and other agencies is targeting my son and his friends.” He also said that the Centre wanted to stop him from ‘writing’. “Government wants to stop me from writing, as it has tried to with leaders of Opposition parties, journalists, columnists, NGOs and civil society,” Chidambaram said, according to ANI report. “Every case processed according to law and approval was granted or refused accordance with FIPB recommendations consisting of 5 GOI Secretaries,” Chidambaram said, ANI reports.

Chidambaram, a staunch critic of the Narendra Modi-led BJP regime, has said in the past that his voice against the Centre cannot be silenced by launching cases against him or his son Karti, also a Congress leader.
