After being released from his second detention of the day, for trying to meet the family of the ex-serviceman who committed suicide today, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi urged the PM Narendra Modi government to apologize to the family of the former jawan for having made them suffer.

OROP suicide: After being released from his second detention of the day, for trying to meet the family of the ex-serviceman who committed suicide today, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi urged the PM Narendra Modi government to apologize to the family of the former jawan for having made them suffer.

“This is the most difficult day for them (family members of late ex serviceman) but even today they were made to suffer,” said the congress vice-president while addressing the media after his releasse.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that, when the police were questioned for their action, they said that there were orders from higher up instructing them to do so. Stating that injustice had been done to the family members of the dexeased, Gandhi said that he had no problems with his arrest but had urged the police to leave the family. Gandhi said that he wanted to speak to the family members for two minutes but the police stated beating up the family members as they came out and then dragged them to the police station.

Ex-serviceman Subedar Ram Kisan Grewal, who had come to the city to submit a memorandum to the Defence Ministry on the issues relating One Ran One Pension (OROP), allegedly committed suicide, consuming poison. In a letter, before his death, Grewal had apparently pleaded to the government for the implementation of OROP.

Following reports of the alleged suicide, earlier in the morning, Rahul Gandhi was detained by the Delhi Police for attempting to meet the family members of the deceased ex-servieman at the RML Hospital. Later in the evening, the congress vice-president was detained again for the second time with congress leader Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, from continuing protest outside the hospital.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also detained and had been taken to the R K Puram police station for trying to meet the relatives of the ex-serviceman.
