Amid the chaos over ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal’s suicide, a shocking phone call audio has been released in which Grewal said that he had consumed poison – the call was made by the jawan to his son after he had consumed the poison. In the 3:20 minutes long audio, Grewal was heard telling his son, “I have consumed poison.” When his shocked son asked, ‘What are you saying and where are you’ he said, ‘I am sitting near India Gate. I have taken poison. The government is doing injustice with us (Ex-armymen). We have to fight against injustice.’

Grewal, who was staging a protest at Jantar Mantar over the One Rank One Pension (OROP) demand, had committed suicide by consuming poison today. After releasing the audio to the media, Grewal’s son lashed out at General VK Singh over his comment on the mental status of Ram Kishan Grewal. Singh had said, “He has committed suicide. No one knows the reason behind it. OROP is being shown as the reason. What his mental state was we do not know. Let it be probed first. OROP should be kept above politics.” Grewal’s son termed his comment as being highly insensitive towards him and his family.

Here are the words spoken by the former jawan even as he was dying:
* We have to fight against injustice.
* Justice has not been done to soldiers.
* I took poison five minutes ago.
* I have consumed two-three tablets.
* I am a man of principles.
* This is for my soldiers.
* This is for my country.

The audio was released on the India Today channel. The incident triggered a nation-wide controversy and Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister lashed out at government – they were detained by the Delhi Police subsequently.
