OROP suicide: Comments made by former army chief and present Union Minister in the Narendra Modi government General V K Singh on the suicide of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal over not receiving One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme benefits, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reacted in anger.

Following reports on the suicide of the former army subedar, Gen VK Singh demanded an investigation on the matter saying, “Reason for his suicide being reported is OROP, don’t know what his mental state was, need investigation.”

Infuriated by the former Army chief’s statement, the Delhi Chief Minister in a tweet said, “Shame on u VKSingh. He twice got medals from President and once from COAS. He was a decorated soldier.”

Ex-serviceman Subedar Ram Kisan Grewal, who had come to the city to submit a memorandum to the Defence Ministry on the issues relating One Ran One Pension (OROP), allegedly committed suicide, consuming poison. In a letter, before his death, Grewal had apparently pleaded to the government for the implementation of OROP.

Following the suicide, politicians tried to meet the family of the ex-serviceman, but were detained by the Delhi police. Kejriwal was stopped from entering the hospital where the body of Grewal is kept for post mortem, while Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was detained for attempting to meet the relatives of the deceased army man.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was also been restricted from entering the RML Hospital and was detained at the Mandir Marg police station for 70 minutes.
