Onam is here and the Keralites are ready to throng their native places to celebrate and honour the beloved demon king Mahabali’s visit. Observed during the month of Chingam, the festival is celebrated to mark the summer harvest. The Railways has arranged special trains for people going to attend the festival in Kerala. Indianexpress.com reports that the festival begins on the day on which Malayalam star Atham falls. On the occasion, people start putting flower carpets (pookalam) outside their houses, the report says. The 10th day after fall of Atham is considered the most important day of the festival, also known as Thiruvonam. This year, Thiruvonam is likely to fall on September 4. That way, the first Onam falls on subsequent day on September 5, marked by the star Avittam, followed by the second day thereafter on September 6, marked by Chathayam.
The Railway Ministry has scheduled 41 trips of the special trains between September 1 and September 10 for Onam 2017. “These special trains are being run in keeping in view the pattern of traffic, commercial viability, operational feasibility and availability of resources,” a statement issued by Ministry of Railways said.
Here is a list of all the trains being run by the Ministry of Railways for Onam 2017.
